Psoralea corylifolia is a synonym of Cullen corylifolium. It is an annual herb widely used in TraditionalOriental Medicine and Ayurvedic system as a tonic remedy for heart. It has warm nature, and therefore itshows various therapeutic actions on kidney and spleen. According to the scientific studies, it is reportedto have vasodilating, anti-tumor, anti-diabetes, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterialactivities. The seeds of P. corylifolia in fact have a greater medicinal value, and in Ayurveda, it is orally takenfor the treatment of leucoderma, leprosy, psoriasis, hair loss, and other inflammatory skin diseases. A wide range of phytochemicals are found in P. corylifolia, including psoralen, isopsoralen, bakuchiol,psoralidin, bakuchalcone, bavachinin, flavones, volatile oils, lipids, etc. Among these compounds,psoralen and bakuchiol are the main active compounds. Psoralen is reported to possess melaninstimulating activity while bakuchiol has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. In a recent study,it is reported that bakuchiol also shows anti-aging activity which can act as a functional analogue of retinolwith better photostability.
